Beaver & Capybara Fossils
Beavers and Capybaras are very large members of the rodent family. They also migrated to North America from South and Central America during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs during periods of lower sea level.
Beavers today are smaller than their fossil relatives which was a familiar theme to many ice-age animals such as bears, wolves, camels, elephants, armadillos and others. Some fossil beaver species reached the size of modern-day black bears.
Capybaras live along waterways in central and South America today and are at home in the water or on land. They look much like extra-large guinea pigs.
Giant beavers and Capybaras went extinct approximately 10,000 years ago in North America along with most other large animals of the Pleistocene. Here are some of the Beaver Fossils and Capybara Fossils we found on our fossil hunting tours.
